Ek Balam Mayan Ruin is a wonderful Mayan site with most structures dating from the 8th century. With excavations only begun in 1998, it is still relatively unknown but growing in popularity. We got there early in the morning and had the place to ourselves and had a great visit. Unlike Chichen Itza, you can still climb most of the structures here, including the largest pyramid in the Yucatan, the Acropolis. Below are some pictures from our visit, and after those, you can find links to articles about our visit to Ek Balam and another on advice and tips on how to see it yourself. There is also a link to my favorite Mesoamerican ruins that I have seen – find out how Ek Balam ranks against other more famous ruins like Chichen Itza and Palenque.
